Aigora supports Fraunhofer on AI for intraoperative tissue assessment

The KIVI research project aims to help surgeons distinguish healthy from diseased tissue directly in the operating room.

MUNICH, Germany – Aigora is supporting Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, Fraunhofer MEVIS and partners in the research project KIVI. The project focuses on developing a portable, AI-supported imaging system based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) to help surgeons distinguish healthy from diseased tissue directly in the operating room.

OCT produces high-resolution cross-sectional images of tissue in real time. In KIVI, AI is used to automatically classify liver tissue in OCT images. The aim is to reduce time- and resource-intensive intraoperative histology, shorten operating times and lower the burden on patients.

The project brings together Fraunhofer IPT, Fraunhofer MEVIS, University Hospital RWTH Aachen, HS Analysis GmbH and ZEISS Medical Technology alongside Aigora. KIVI is funded with €2.13 million by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
