Aigora contributes expertise on medical image de-identification best practices

De-identification best practices published in the Journal of Imaging Informatics in Medicine with co-authorship from Aigora.

February 20, 2025

MUNICH, Germany – Together with a team of experts from academia, government and industry, Aigora co-founder Christian Ludwigs co-authored a paper on medical image de-identification, published in the Journal of Imaging Informatics in Medicine. It summarises best practices, tools and international approaches for de-identifying medical images used in research and AI development.

Aigora’s contribution offers a European perspective on medical image de-identification and how requirements differ from the US. Unlike HIPAA, the GDPR does not prescribe a specific de-identification method but focuses on minimising the residual risk of re-identification. It also gives a brief insight into practices from Aigora’s own work, combining rule-based and statistical de-identification and expert quality control with technical, organisational and contractual safeguards.

The publication builds on the 2023 virtual workshop on medical image de-identification of the US National Cancer Institute, in which Aigora also participated.
